I have lost everyone I know to RED DEAD REDEMPTION. It’s an epidemic. I’ve had friends say “we can’t chill out until I beat this game, and I’m only thirty percent done.” With glee, my roommate has said ‘good night’ and shut his bedroom door in my face, only to escape to a world of Old West brutality with superb voice acting.
And so… feeling a bit unconnected… I return to my world of movies. Only to find that MASS EFFECT will be produced as a major motion picture. GEARS OF WAR is gearing up for production. There’s a sequel to HITMAN in the works. Somewhere in the beyond lies a truly brilliant adaptation of BIO-SHOCK. And with PRINCE OF PERSIA: SANDS OF TIME on the horizon… I realize this one true fact….
…there has not been a great movie made from a video game yet. It’s another holy grail that Hollywood has been unable to drink from. Sure as shit, if they find a formula that works, then we’ll get that formula for ten years. But until now, they’ve not made a truly great film that has lived up to the average gamer’s expectations.
Over at Bonus Level, there’s an interesting three-part retrospective that’s taking place. They’re rewatching every film adapted from a videogame and chronicling each failed attempt – from SUPER MARIO BROTHERS to WING COMMANDER to RESIDENT EVIL and so forth.
Games and Film: Part 1
I think it makes for interesting reading – perhaps those obsessed with RDR might take a breather to give it a read. Don’t worry – you’ll be able to ride your invisible horses again soon enough….
It is totally awesome and the best thing ever written by Man.
Agreed. Better than the Magna Carta.
It ended up being a good quality read while I waited on the video getting ready. Excellent write-up.
