Lost Art of Filmmaking represents my attempt to highlight examples of film language that no longer seems to appear on the radar of a majority of working filmmakers.
Each column, I’ll choose a clip from a movie that demonstrates a ‘lost art’ of some sort, ask you to watch it, and then go into detail about why this particular slice of movie is worth bringing back into focus…

I’m not a gamer. I’m a gamer ‘passenger.’My skills on the joystick have waned since the days of getting creamed on the grenade launcher stage of GOLDENEYE. Since then, the gaming world has exploded with surprising artistry and depth. I don’t play anymore… I dare not. There’s already enough humiliation in this world.
So I stay out of the driver’s seat.
But I love to ride shotgun.
Like a proper voyeur… I like to watch.

Video games into movies. It’s like trying to make an Indiana Jones film about aliens. Doesn’t really work all that well. The boys at Bonus Level know this. They’ve been doing a retrospective of all the games that have been adapted into films and sort of not worked.* Pretty good stuff.
