Lists are really just a fun way to put out to the world which movies were your favorites. Sure, taste and critical analysis and emotional reaction and craft are all factors – but generally, it’s the lister telling the list-readers which movies they should definitely check out if they haven’t. Hi all.  I suck at television. Don’t get me wrong.  I love, love, love a good longform story.  Television is an amazing place to find great stories and characters and writings and holy-f%$k moments.  But I’ve fallen into the Netflix ‘I’ll catch the whole series later’ limbo, and – shit, I haven’t even finished LOST.  So yes, I suck at television.
But I recognize that as brilliant as Get To The Chopper is (tongue firmly in cheek) that there might be readers who’d like more television coverage.  Plus, I love reading about what shows are out there – great way to whittle out the dreck and focus on the genius.
Chopper TV will basically be just that – dreck-whittling and genius-focusing.  Television writings of a badass kind.  And helping to pioneer the path for us (cue Hans Zimmer track) is our new TV byline spearheaded by new Chopper columnist Angel Perales.   He’s a terrific writer, journalist, and poet with strong opinions (even if you don’t agree with them) and the goods to back them up. Plus, he’s won two Emmys for his work on the news – not a bad pedigree.
Feel free to check out his writings at RUMRAZOR PRESS and stay tuned for his first upcoming byline FIVE OLD FACES, FIVE NEW SHOWS.
I’d like you all to officially welcome Angel Perales.  He’ll be around.

REVIEW:  RANGO

Rango+movie

Got into a sneak preview at the last minute to see RANGO at the AMC in Toronto.  Here’s what I saw and thought.
RANGO reminded me of the joy I used to feel during the last Golden Age of Disney animation.  The age that peaked with THE LION KING and MULAN (excepting the musical numbers, some great action moments). Yes, PIXAR is the king of all kings, and storytelling is their queen, but one thing about PIXAR is the imagery feels a bit familiar to me.  They all look like PIXAR movies in that PIXAR style.  I wanted something fresh for my palate.
I got that with RANGO.

(For All Those Other People)

A ten-part series that stops putting the burden of New Year Resolutions on world at large.  These resolutions will make Americans less annoying and more wonderful to be around.   Let the world change, and not us… for a change…

RESOLUTION TWO: “I will remember to admire accomplishment over arrogance.”

I hate Inspector Gadget.  This is not a joke.  I have reasons.

Inspector Gadget is like an animated BIRTH OF A NATION.  Sure, people liked it when it came out, but once you saw what was going on underneath (i.e. blatant racism), you never quite saw it the same way again.

All that time spent watching those episodes… enduring Gadget’s moronic malfunctions and intolerably low intelligence… all that time waiting for one thing to happen.  One thing to justify the whole series. And it never happened.  Not once.

TRUE GRIT (2010) deserves every accolade it gets. There is nary a false note in this picture, and after two hours of sheer movie bliss, I left the theater invigorated.  More importantly, it reignited my interest in the Western genre, and made me want to do a special overall piece on Westerns for the site.

Unfortunately, I’m no expert.  Fortunately, I know a guy…

true-grit-2010-posterChad Nance is a counter-culture reporter and columnist whom I’ve known for too many years. He’s written stuff for Skunk, Radar, Details, Gawker, and Aint It Cool News; he’s also the creator and author of Weird Load: Only In America, and starting May 2011, will make contributions to a brand new horror magazine from the creators of Famous Monsters Of Filmland.  More relevantly, he’s my go-to guy when it comes to Westerns, and I always look forward to hearing his perspective on the Old West and films in general (his take on the racism inherent in AVATAR was enlightening – you can read that piece by clicking HERE).
